Mehring & Associates, LLC offers a range of investigative services tailored for law firms; financial institutions including private equity and insurance companies; and corporations and small businesses, including nonprofit and private clients. Led by Chris Mehring, a retired federal agent with over 25 years of experience in criminal investigations, civil investigations, and national security, the firm specializes in conducting background investigations, suitability assessments, confidential inquiries, and due diligence investigations, as well as pre and post-judgment asset searches. Additionally, Mr. Mehring provides essential litigation support and criminal defense services, as well as conducts security clearance investigations for the federal government.

Previously serving as a Resident Agent in Charge with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), Office of Inspector General, Defense Criminal Investigative Service (DCIS), Mr. Mehring dedicated a significant portion of his career to conducting detailed criminal investigations as a DCIS Special Agent. Throughout his tenure, he managed a wide range of complex criminal and civil investigations that impacted the programs and operations of the DoD.

Mr. Mehring's expertise spans various categories of investigations, including procurement and contract fraud, product substitution, illegal technology export, healthcare and TRICARE fraud, criminal conspiracy, intellectual property theft, computer crimes such as hacking and child exploitation, antitrust violations, False Claims Act violations, and international banking and money laundering. These intricate investigations often reveal multi-entity conspiracies and focus on criminal, civil, and administrative culpability involving both individuals and businesses.

For instance, Mr. Mehring led an investigation into a state-sponsored campaign aimed at stealing sensitive research and development data from numerous government agencies, including the U.S. military and NASA, as well as defense contractors. This investigation identified nearly two hundred victim entities worldwide over several years and uncovered over a dozen zero-day exploits that were utilized to enhance the DoD's cyber network defense.

Another notable case involved several large aerospace companies that knowingly procured counterfeit microprocessors from overseas, which were then distributed within U.S. military and commercial supply chains. This incident had severe consequences, including the loss of lives and damage to military helicopters, ultimately leading to significant individual and corporate liability, as well as suspensions and debarments from federal contracts.

Mr. Mehring’s commitment to defending the DoD and its contractors from white-collar crime was evident in an investigation concerning the theft of proprietary research and development data related to unmanned underwater vehicles. This theft not only threatened national security but also had the potential to influence future DoD contracts and infringe on protected trade secrets.

Mr. Mehring holds a security clearance with the U.S. government and is licensed in the State of Connecticut as a private detective. Mr. Mehring has completed training academies and programs at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center including the Criminal Investigation Training Program and the U.S. Immigration Officer Basic Training Academy, as well as the Defense Computer Investigation Training Academy. Mr. Mehring is a Certified Fraud Examiner, and maintains his membership in the Association for Certified Fraud Examiners and the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association. Mr. Mehring was previously certified in computer forensic examinations.
